SNELLVILLE, Ga. (AP) — Snellville city leaders say they have new evidence to support their contention that an ordinance authorizing Sunday liquor sales was valid.

Magistrate Judge Mark A. Lewis ruled in January that the ordinance was passed illegally in December and said the seven licenses the city issued for Sunday sales were void.

City officials say the Georgia Legislature approved a bill more than 20 years ago that allows counties where liquor sales are legal and cities within those counties to permit Sunday sales without another referendum.

They're asking for a new trial, and say they're planning to present an affidavit by Gwinnett County Commission Chairman Charles Bannister, who wrote the Sunday sales bill as a House member in 1987.
