Columbus man's body found in Chattahoochee River

COLUMBUS — The body has been recovered of a Columbus man who was swept away in the Chattahoochee River.

Muscogee County Coroner Bill Thrower told the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer the body of 43-year-old William Cook was found Saturday in the river in an area near the Linden Point landing.

Deputy Coroner Charles Newton said Cook’s body was sent to the crime lab in Atlanta where an autopsy will be performed Monday.

Police Lt. Lynn Joiner told the Ledger-Enquirer Cook apparently drowned after wading into the river Friday said the death appears to be a drowning that occurred after Cook waded into the river about 6:30 p.m. Friday. Joiner said Cook apparently stepped into a deep spot and was swept away.
