TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (AP) — Police officers on Tybee Island's beaches are going after people who break a law by bringing glass onto the island's beaches.

But instead of ticketing them for a $90 violation, they're offering violators plastic cups.

Tybee police interim Chief Bob Bryson says his department began issuing the cups last weekend as a way to teach newcomers how to keep beachgoers from being cut by broken bottles.

Police Officer Andy Capps says injuries from broken glass occur regularly at the beach, and many of the cuts are serious. He says the rule is posted at every public access to the beach, but he says people get excited about arriving at the beach and don't read the signs.
