A man accused of taking a tractor and trailer from Tractor Supply Co. on July 9 turned himself in at the Floyd County Jail on Tuesday night, said Rome Police detective Chris Arrington.

Randal Clifton Barton, 58, of 27 Park Road, is charged with theft by taking and is being held for probation, according to jail records.

Officers earlier released video of the alleged theft, which can be viewed at RN-T.com.

Police interviewed Barton Tuesday and warrants were issued after the interview, Arrington said. He remained in the Floyd County Jail on Wednesday afternoon.

From July 14: Police looking for help in Tractor Supply Co. theft

Rome Police detective Chris Arrington is looking for help from the community in solving a theft of a lawn tractor and a trailer from Tractor Supply Co.

According to Rome police reports:

The lawn tractor and trailer were taken from the Tractor Supply Co. on U.S. 411 Friday around 9:30 p.m. Arrington said they are looking for a heavyset white male suspect, between the ages of 40 and 60.

The suspect pulled up to Tractor Supply Co. around 8:50 p.m. first to look at the tractors, then returned to take the lawn tractor and trailer around 9:30 p.m. on July 9.

Arrington said the man was driving what he believed was a white Toyota Tacoma pickup truck with a king cab.

The value of the lawn tractor – a Cub Cadet model – and the trailer were combined at $2,500.

If anyone has any information about the theft or a suspect, call Arrington at the Rome Police Department at 706-238-5126.

Wonder what else went on here. No way in hell the person on the video was recognizable and the truck just barely.

It is amazing the lengths that some people will go too.. But am I mistaken or isn't there a locked gate at the driveway of Tractor Supply? I wonder if this man cut the lock? Or like a previous poster asked.. Did he have help? It looks as if he arranged for that particular trailer not to be secured. Did the person responsible to lock these items up miss this??? Too many unanswered questions.... But does people not realize that they are on video almost EVERYWHERE???

Well, let's think about this a moment. Trailer is already loaded with a nice lawn tractor. Doesn't appear to be secured, or did I miss the part of the video where he would have cut a cable securing these items? Could he have had some assistance preparing these items for the theft? Seems to have been really easy to just drive up, hook up, and haul away! Interesting, to say the least.

Looking at the video, I see that on his first visit, he prepared the trailer to be stolen. Later, he returns, hooks up, and drives away. I would bet that he went to Wal Mart to kill time before coming back. I would definitely check their cameras, there would probably be a much better quality image of him walking in the front door. Also, check the local gas stations around the area. If the man is stealing, he isn't going to be wasting his gas driving in circles.

A shot at some real police work and they need the public's help? I guess this one isn't as easy as circling Broad St. taking the easy mark leaving one of the establishments downtown.

Mlowery is correct...look up the rear lights for both trucks mentioned (tacoma and chevy). The rear lights look like gm products to me.

Lowery, I'm pretty sure that it IS a white Toyota Tacoma. It looks a little small to be a Silverado or GM truck and the Tacoma's are small.

That's not a white Tacoma. That's a Silverado or other GM truck.. it looks NOTHING like a a Tacoma.

The white object in the back of the pickup appears to be a 55 gallon drum cut in half. I have one I use as a tank to keep shad alive in to fish with. A good start would be checking out area boat ramps. Shad only live in the river systems locally. They cannot live in stagnant water.
