ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — A University of Georgia researcher has received a $1.5 million federal grant to study what approaches to teaching reading help increase language and vocabulary.

Scott Ardoin, an associate professor in the UGA College of Education, will use eye-tracking technology to determine what teaching strategies work best for students learning how to read. The four-year study will work with second-graders from a Georgia school district.

It will focus on students reading at or above grade level as well as those struggling with learning how to read.

The grant is from the U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences.
