Rome teams begin Dizzy Dean title hunt

Six teams from the Rome area began their quest for a Dizzy Dean World Series title on Saturday in Southaven, Miss. With mixed results.

The 8-year-old Rome Braves had the best day of the local contingent going 2-0 to start pool play. The Braves defeated the Batesville Red Wasps, 13-1, and the Sandy Plains Cougars, 14-2. They will play the Bradley North Blues today at 4:30 p.m.

The 8-year-old Rome Rookies, who are playing in a separate pool, didn’t have as successful a showing on the first day going 0-2. They will play at 4:30 p.m. today against the Northport Patriots.

The 16-year-old Rome Chiefs got off to a solid start, defeating the Horn Lake All-Stars to move into the next round. They will now face the Oxford All-Stars on Monday at noon.

The 12-year-old Rome Renegades opened their trip with an 8-6 loss to the Pensacola Bill Bond in pool play, but rebounded in the afternoon with a 5-0 win over the Jemison All-Stars. They will complete pool play today with two games, one coming at 9 a.m. against the Southaven All-Stars and the other at 2 p.m. versus the West Point All-Stars.

The 10-year-old Aragon Outlaws and 14-year-old Rome Outcast were both knocked into the loser’s bracket in their respective tournaments. The Outlaws fell to the Tupelo All-Stars, and will play an elimination game against the Tallahassee American today at 9 a.m.

The Outcast went down to the Irondale All-Stars, and will face off with the Southaven All-Stars today at 11:30 a.m. with the loser being eliminated.
